Key administration officials and private research directors testified during four days of hearings on the long-range effect of budget cuts on US research efforts. At issue are the need to preserve continuity in the development of knowledge and technology and the need to balance this goal with short-term efforts to slow inflation. Presidential science advisor, George Keyworth, explained the administration's approach. Other speakers were Frank Press of the National Academy of Sciences, Allan Bromley of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and representatives of universities and scientific institutes.
