Districts minimize energy costs with digester gas

Conference · · J. - Water Pollut. Control Fed.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6581669
Through the efficient use of digester gas to power major equipment, as well as the recovery of other onsite energy (e.g., waste heat generated by the plants' digester-gas-powered engines), the County Sanitation Districts of Orange County, Calif., currently realizes a savings in energy costs of nearly $1 million/yr at its 8.06 cu m/sec joint works wastewater treatment facilities. Industrial waste makes up about 25% of the total waste load. As the result of more than 20 yr of developing its gas recovery and utilization system, over 60% of the districts' current energy consumption is satisfied by digester gas. Approximately 71,000 cu m/day of gas are used directly to fuel engines, incinerators, and boilers. Gas production, storage, and use; energy consumption; optimizing energy use and reliability; and operating experience are described in detail.
