This paper describes the conversion of St. Clair Unit 6 to burn off-design coal. All relevant systems are evaluated for their capability to meet the new requirements caused by the conversion to low sulfur coal, technically as well as economically for cost effectiveness. It is cited that prolonged test burn with the intended off-design coal is a must to provide input for both technical and economic analysis. Engineering moneys spent in the early part of the project planning and setting up controls prove to reduce the expense of field changes and delays.
