Development of discharge in Ne--He laser tubes

Results are reported of an experimental study of the development of a discharge in Ne--He laser tubes. The discharge develops from the high voltabe electrode (anode) as an ionization wave, the velocity of which depends on the parameters of the discharge-exciting circuit and the experimental conditions, such as the presence of screens and the location of nearby grounded metal objects. The intensity distribution is obtained for the emission along the channel during the time the ionization wave developes. After the ionization wave reaches the cathode region, a series of transient processes occurs and a stationary discharge becomes established in the tube.
