A review of the literature on biological filters for wastewater treatment systems is presented. Rotating biological contactors, anaerobic filters, fluidized bed reactors, trickling filters, fixed film processes, and multistage systems are discussed. Several Department of Energy-sponsored reports are reviewed in the article, and energy saving aspects of certain types of filters are discussed. (JMT)
