Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are available to suit almost every power plant control application. For any process requiring two or more loops of control or 12 or more relays, a PLC is a cost-effective alternative to traditional hardware. Prime among its numerous benefits is improved reliability, and based on that fact alone PLCs will continue to impact the entire control industry. This article describes a networking project, reviews lessons learned in the past 10 years, and looks at the future.
