GRI program in unconventional natural gas

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6567094
GRI's R and D program on unconventional gas - tight gas sands, coalbed methane, and eastern Devonian shales - focuses on the development of techniques and methods that reduce the risks associated with exploring for these resources. The low-permeability reservoirs holding these gases are difficult to produce with current technology; a stimulation successful in a specific area might not work as well in nearby reservoirs. Development of unconventional gas resources requires a better understanding of the reservoir characteristics, the stimulation parameters, and the relationship between them, along with translation of this knowledge into improved tools and techniques. With reduced risks and advanced technology, industry can produce these resources and increase the US gas supply substantially.
