The Gas Research Institute is developing technology for the economical recovery of natural gas from three sources not generally producible with current technology tight gas sands, coal bed methane, and eastern Devonian shales. These unconventional gas resources are dispersed over a large geographic area and occur in a wide variety of geologic environments. Technology that is successful in stimulating gas production in a specific area maybe less than successful in nearby areas. Differences, often subtle, in the characteristics of the reservoirs and of the bounding strata can have a significant effect on stimulation effectiveness. A better understanding of the reservoir characteristics, stimulation parameters and the relationship between them is required together with translation of this improved understanding into improved tools and techniques.
