Dust grains in reflection nebulae. II. Infinite circular cylinders

The U-B, B-V, V-R color indices and the U, B, V, R percentage polarization are calculated for a homogeneous spherical nebula in the single-scattering approximation. The Lind-Greenberg theory is applied to determine scattering functions for ensembles of infinite, circular model cylinders composed of dirty ice or silicates and oriented at random in space or in a plane normal to the direction toward the illuminating star. The effects of varying the mean grain size are examined. In the V, R bands, a nebula consisting of cylindrical particles with a space-random orientation will be less strongly polarized than a nebula consisting of spherules of the same size.
