OSTI ID:6560251
The two-year authorizing bill (S. 2846) covers $466.8 million in salaries and expenses for 3371 positions in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and a $7.7 million decrease from 1983 funding. The bill also authorizes $460 million for 3325 positions in 1985. The committee report recognizes new responsibilities added to the NRC's duties and notes the introduction of the two-year authorization process. It describes the duties and budget amounts for regulation, inspection and enforcement, nuclear material safety and safeguards, research, program technical support, and program management. The report also covers cooperative research agreements, efforts to develop the Nuclear Data Link system, utility licensing and preparedness, and nuclear waste. A summary of information developed during public hearings, estimates of the cost of the authorizing bill, and an evaluation of the regulatory impact is followed by roll call votes and the supplemental views of one Senator.
