A method of demulsification uses branched polyalkylene polyamines or their derivatives as demulsifiers for water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions. In addition to demulsification these products have a broad spectrum of uses. Among other uses are the following: (1) as corrosion inhibitors; (2) as fuel oil or lubricating oil additives; (3) as scale preventatives; (4) as acidizing additives; (5) as water-treating agents in waterflooding operations; (6) as mud additives; (7) as agents for the removal of mud filter cake from the walls of newly drilled wells; (8) as agents in paraffin solvents; (9) as additives in fracturing fluids; and (10) as agents in bactericides and fungicides.
