Recently, the trend in developing new natural gas reserves has been toward intensified efforts to exploit both deep as well as low permeability gas reservoirs. Technical advances in well-stimulation techniques such as massive hydraulic fracturing (MHF) along with increases in gas prices have made development of low permeability formations an economic possibility. To make an economic evaluation of low-permeability gas reservoir development, it is necessary to predict the expected future performance of MHF wells. This study presents (1) a discussion of the limitations of the conventional pressure transient methods and other methods in evaluating an MHF well treatment, (2) a set of constant well rate and constant well pressure type curves for analyzing MHF wells, (3) a discussion of the type-curve matching technique, (4) actual application of the new type curves in analyzing the performance of MHF wells, and (5) performance prediction of MHF wells.
