Near Decatur, Texas, in Wise County's Gas Finders field, mid-Sept. stimulation of a drooping Bend Conglomerate gasser proved the biggest fracturing treatment in the history of the Fort Worth Basin. The well was Dallas Production's No. 1-A Ferguson, a 1973 completion whose output had declined to an unprofitable 40,000 cu ft daily and whose stimulation results will be analyzed with interest by owners of some 1,400 other Bend Conglomerate wells in the general vicinity. The first massive hydraulic fracturing (MHF) treatments of gas-bearing formations in the east were conducted recently by Columbia Gas Transmission Corp., in Lincoln County, West Virginia. Both foam and water fracturing were conducted in separate tests as part of a 3-well experimental program on Devonian shale formations. Ten more shale treatments are scheduled in the 30-mo., $4.4 million project.
