A closed system was described to manufacture char by hydropyrolyzing spent sulfite liquor of approximately 25% solids content under 1000-3500 psig pressure at 490-700 degrees F and separating and washing the formed char. The gases formed during hydropyrolysis were burned to heat up spent liquor to be pyrolyzed and to produce steam.
