Novel effect of neighboring groups on the quenching of the excited state of a polymer-pendant Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ by methylviologen

A polymer-pendant tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complex was prepared from the copolymer of 4-methyl-4'-vinyl-2,2'-bipyridine and acrylic acid, and the quenching of its excited state by methylviologen was studied. The quenching rate constant showed a remarkable pH dependence and was an order of magnitude larger than that of the monomeric Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ in alkaline medium. This behavior is discussed in terms of the electrostatic effect of the polyanioic domains provided by the dissociated carboxylic groups. 15 references, 2 figures.
