Quantum yield of formation of methylviologen radical cation in the photolysis of the Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +//methylviologen/EDTA system

The quantum yield of formation of the methylviologen radical cation, PHI (MV/sup +/), upon the 450-nm continuous photolysis of the Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +//methylviologen dication/EDTA system in deaerated aqueous solution bpy-bipyridine has been determined as a function of (MV/sup 2 +/) (0.5-20 mM), (EDTA) (0.05-100 mM), pH (3.7-11.0), and temperature (6-50/sup 0/C) at constant (Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/) (1.0 x 10/sup -4/ M). The results are discussed in terms of the mechanism of the reaction and the effect of solution medium on the rate constant of quenching of *Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ by MV/sup 2 +/, the cage release yield of redox products, the scavenging of Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 3 +/ by EDTA, and the secondary reduction of MV/sup 2 +/ by EDTA-derived radicals. 46 references, 9 figures, 3 tables.
