The hearing was on the National Academy of Science's National Research Council's CONAES report, Energy in transition: 1985-2010 (EAPA 6:4038). The first witness was one of the co-editors of the report, Dr Harvey Brooks of Harvard, who also co-chaired the Committee on Nuclear and Alternative Systems of the NAS/NRC study. Dr. Brooks, before summarizing the highlights of the CONAES report, gave some general observations on the way the committee approached its tasks and the perspective from which its conclusions and observations should be viewed. Additional witnesses were: (1) Dr. Edward A. Frieman, Director of Energy Research, DOE, who compared the CONAES conclusions with some of the administration's programs and policies; and (2) George H. Lawrence, President of the American Gas Association, who provided the gas industry's views on the CONAES report.
