Energy in transition

After more than four years of research, debate, and compromise, the National Academy of Sciences not long ago released a monumental energy report that its president calls the most complex task ever attempted by the Academy's Research Council. The summary, Energy in Transition - 1985-2010, was produced by the 16-member Committee on Nuclear and Alternative Energy Systems (CONAES), and mostly written by cochairman Harvey Brooks, professor of technology and public policy at Harvard. In order of emphasis, CONAES concluded that (1) our top priority as a nation should be energy conservation; (2) our most critical near-term problem is the shortage of fluid fuels, such as gasoline; (3) coal and uranium are the only large-scale intermediate-term options for electricity generation; (4) we should push ahead to develop the breeder reactor; and (5) we should spend more money on research and development of alternative sources of energy. Each of these statements are discussed.
