This report provides comprehensive information about coal production, exports, imports, receipts, consumption, and stocks in the United States. Evidence of the Nation's economic slump was reflected by coal statistics for the second quarter of 1982. Except for a continued high export volume, all quarterly indicators showed depressed coal market conditions. Second quarter data revealed: the largest decline in quarterly coal consumption in recent years; receipts exceeding demand requirements by wide margins; near-record stockpiling of coal by consumers and by producers and distributors; lower-than-normal coal consumption at electric utilities; sharply reduced coke production; continued high export levels; and moderate increases in coal prices. The United States produced 213.8 million short tons of coal during the second quarter of 1982, 2.3% less than in the first quarter. US coal exports totaled 31.6 million short tons during the second quarter of 1982. During the first half of the year they reached a record 57.2 million short tons, 33.6% above last year's level. Domestic coal receipts in all end-use sectors exceeded requirements, particularly at electric utilities, which are predominantly tied to long-term contracts with take-or-pay provisions. The average price of steam coal at electric utilities and other industrial plants rose to $35.31 per short ton (a 1.7% increase) and $41.78 per short ton (a 1.6% increase), respectively. The average price of metallurgical coal at coke plants rose 2.0% to $66.36 per short ton. Domestic coal consumption fell 23.1 million short tons during the second quarter of 1982. It was the largest quarterly decline in recent years. (DMC)
