This report, provides comprehensive information about coal production, exports, imports, receipts, consumption, and stocks in the United States. The United States produced 218.7 million short tons of coal during the first quarter of 1982. This production total surpasses by 2.2 percent the amount produced during the first quarter of 1981. The United States exported 25.6 million short tons of coal during the first quarter of 1982. This exceeds by 14.8 percent the amount, 22.3 million short tons, exported during the same quarter of the previous year. The price of coal exports averaged $57.93 per short ton during January-March of 1982, $50.21 during those three months of 1981. US coal receipts at all end-use sectors during the first quarter of 1982 totalled 177.2 million short tons, 6.1 percent less than in the first quarter of 1981. Coal consumption during the first quarter of 1982 dropped slightly (0.1 percent) from the first quarter of 1981: 187.0 million short tons compared to 187.3 million. Total US coal stocks rose 1.5 percent to 212.6 million short tons on March 31, 1982, primarily due to an increase of 9.3 million short tons (38.6 percent) in coal stocks held by US coal producers and distributors. Coal production in 1982 is projected to be 883.6 million short tons, up 7.7 percent from the 1981 level of 820.1 million short tons. Domestic coal consumption is projected to rise from its 1981 level of 732.2 million short tons by only 1.9 percent, to 745.9 million short tons in 1982. Given that the economic recovery is projected not to begin until late 1982, coking coal consumpton is not expected to increase significantly until the fourth quarter of 1982.
