Steam purge of a piston/cylinder gap in a diesel engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6546488
This patent describes an internal combustion engine comprising: a block defining at least one cylinder including a head surface and a wall surface; a piston slidingly mounted in the cylinder including a crown having a crown surface adjacent the cylinder head surface and a sidewall surface spaced from the cylinder wall surface by a gap; sealing means circumferentially surrounding the piston sidewall surface and spaced from the crown surface for establishing a compression seal between the piston and the cylinder. The combination is described of: the piston crown further defining a first chamber; means situated in the piston sidewall surface between the sealing means and the piston crown surface for conducting a vapor between the first chamber and the gap; means for conducting a liquid into the first chamber and containing the liquid under pressure in the first chamber such that the liquid is vaporized by the heat in the cylinder and the vapor seeps through the vapor conducting means and purges the gap between the piston sidewall surface and cylinder wall surface.
