Biomass energy could provide a significant portion of the U.S. energy supply in the year 2000. The environmental costs and benefits of biomass energy and conversion technologies are assessed. There is reason to be optimistic about the role of biomass in the country's energy mix for the future. The pros and cons of alcohol fuel and methanol production are examined.
