Biomass energy economics

Journal Article · · Energy J.; (United States)

The economics, present and future, of biomass fuels is analyzed for the US. The resource base and the technological development effort needed to develop actual supplies are estimated to be capable of doubling biofuels in the forest-products industry by 1985 and making a significant contribution in other sectors. Biomass fuels should be competitive by 2000, with forest residues the major form. The government will need to subsidize research, development, and commercialization programs in the long term, but an evolutionary development is desirable. The use of biomass fuels will be more desirable in the developing countries, where they can complement other renewable energy sources. 53 references, 5 tables. (DCK)
