Cracking process employing catalysts comprising pillared clays

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6542264
This patent describes a cracking process comprising the step of contacting a substantially liquid hydrocarbon-containing feed stream with a solid catalyst composition comprising pillared interlayered clay, under such cracking conditions as to crack at least a portion of the hydrocarbons contained in the feed stream and to produce at least one liquid hydrocarbon-containing product stream boiling to a lower temperature range and having a higher API gravity than the feed stream; wherein the solid catalyst composition has been prepared by a preparation process comprising the steps of: (a) contacting a smectite clay containing material with a solution comprising at least one dissolved carbon and oxygen containing compound selected from the group consisting of ammonium carboxylates containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms per carboxylate group, alkali metal carboxylates containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms per carboxylate group, and alkali metal carbonates, at a temperature of at least 20C and for a period of time of at least one minute; (b) separating the clay product formed in step (a) from the solution.
