Waste incineration and heat recovery

A recent project includes the incineration of organic and aqueous waste streams. The waste streams represent a gross heating valyue of 26 million kcal/h (100 million Btu/h). A system designed to generate approximately 36,000 kg/h (79,366 lb/h) of 1138 kPa (165 psig) steam for plant use, would save $5.5 million a year if the steam produced is valued at $20/1000 kg ($9/1000 lb). The presence of certain components, such as inorganic salts, chlorinated and nitrogen-containing organic compounds, sulfur compounds, and phospho-organics, is critical to the design, and each deserves special considerations, as described in this paper.
