Assessment of the adaptability of the API onboard refueling vapor recovery system to the current vehicle population

The EPA has proposed implementing onboard refueling vapor recovery systems on all new light duty, and possibly heavy duty, gasoline-fueled motor vehicles. These systems prevent gasoline vapors emitted from the fuel tank during the refueling process from entering the atmosphere by containing them in a charcoal canister. API recently designed and tested an onboard refueling vapor control system that is simpler than previous systems and is mounted in the rear of the vehicle, thereby minimizing concerns about system complexity and vulnerability in vehicle collisions. This study estimates the percentage of the current vehicle population that could adapt the API-designed system.
