Kinetic spectroscopic techniques were employed to investigate the reactions of the SO{sub 4}{sup {minus}} and Cl{sub 2}{sup {minus}} radicals following photolysis of K{sub 2}S{sub 2}O{sub 8}-NaCl solutions at 248 nm. The extinction coefficient of SO{sub 4}{sup {minus}} was estimated to have a value of (1.6 {plus minus} 0.1) {times} 10{sup 3} M{sup {minus}1} cm{sup {minus}1} (base 10) at 450 nm, its wavelength of maximum absorbance. A mechanism is proposed which accounts for the observed decay of Cl{sub 2}{sup {minus}} in aqueous solution.
