Free radical reactions in cloud droplets and aerosols are now being included in some atmospheric chemistry models. The sulfate radical anion (SO{sub 4}{sup -}) is a key intermediate in the auto-oxidation of S(IV). It also undergoes reactions with other potentially important ions, anions and species in the atmosphere. We have used 248 nm laser flash photolysis of K{sub 2}S{sub 2}O{sub 8} solutions to generate SO{sub 4}{sup -} radical and have monitored it by using time-resolved multi-pass absorbance at 450 nm. We have determined rate constants for the reactions of SO{sub 4}{sup -} with SO{sub 4}{sup -}, S{sub 2}O{sub 8}{sup 2-} and H{sub 2}O at room temperature. Although generally similar in magnitude to literature values, the rate constants derived from our results differ in some details. We will describe the experimental techniques and compare our results with the literature values. The atmospheric chemistry implications will also be discussed.
