We have detected the S(9), v = 0..-->..0, J = 11..-->..9 line of H/sub 2/ in the molecular-hydrogen emission region in Orion. The line is much weaker ( x 6) than expected from level populations at the previously determined excitation temperature of 2000 K in the shock region. Nonthermal excitation or anomalous extinction in the 4--5 mm region is suggested by this observation. The observed line frequency of 2130 +- 1 cm/sup -1/ provides a new evaluation of the third-order rotation constant, H/sub 0/ = (3.970 +- 0.070) x 10/sup -5/.
