The molecular hydrogen rotation lines, v = 0..-->..0, S(8), S(12), S(13), S(14), and S(15), have been detected in the shocked region of the Orion molecular cloud. Line frequencies agree with predicted values to experimental accuracy ( +- 1 cm/sup -1/). The H/sub 2/ energy levels are in LTE at 2000 +- 400 K up to the J = 17 level at 1.86 eV above the ground state. The 2.1 ..mu..m extinction at peak 1 is found to be betwen 2.2 and 4.0 mag. We find evidence for variations of H/sub 2/ emission intensity, apart from reddening, and set limits on the amount of gas hotter than 2000 K.
