We present preliminary results of a laser beam--ion beam study of photodissociation of the 1,3-butadiene cation at 5145 A. The kinetic energy distribution for C/sub 3/H/sub 3//sup +/ production shows forward--backward symmetry, indicative of a transition dipole parallel to the fragmenting carbon--carbon bond. The most probable kinetic energy release is 75 meV, substantially larger than that observed in recent photoion--photoelectron coincidence measurements. (AIP)
