High-temperature gas-cooled reactor steam-cycle/cogeneration lead plant design and cost report. Volume I: summary

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6534864

Two Lead Plant options have been developed that use a 2240 MWt HTGR Nuclear Steam Supply System: an electric generation plant that produces a net output of 855 MWe, and a cogeneration plant that produces a variable output of process steam and electricity. This document is Volume I of the Lead Plant Design and Cost Report which prvides the current design and cost status of the 2240 MWt high temperature gas-cooled reactor steam cycle/cogeneration (HTGR-SC/C) Lead Plant. A summary status is presented for the Lead Plant conceptual design and costs. The two Lead Plant options are described. A summary of the engineering, capital and operating costs is presented. The costs for an equilibrium plant (nth plant-of-a-kind) of the same configuration as the Lead Plant are also given. The HTGR-SC/C plant costs are then compared with costs for equivalent sized PWR and coal plants. The PWR and coal plant costs were developed using the same basis and methods as used for the HTGR-SC/C estimates. The Lead Plant design and construction schedules are summarized.
