A pump is described for lifting liquids from a well, comprising: a housing having a cylindrical void; a cylindrical piston slidably positioned in the housing and having a channel passing through; means for reciprocatingly moving the piston in the housing to produce an upstroke and a downstroke; a first valve in the channel in the piston arranged to permit the upward passage of the liquids therethrough during the downstroke of the piston and to prevent the downward passage of the liquids during the upstroke of the piston; and a second valve in the channel in the piston arranged to permit the downward passage of the liquids during a first portion of the downstroke and to prevent the downward passage of the liquids during a second portion of the downstroke.
