Nephelauxetic effect in the absorption spectra of cerium, terbium, and erbium ions and mean polarizability of fragments of the ligand molecules

This report demonstrates that the nephelauxetic effect observed in the absorption spectra of the ions Ce/sup 3 +/, Tb/sup 3 +/ (the 5dreverse arrow4f transitions), and Er/sup 3 +/ (the /sup 4/S/sub 3///sub 2/reverse arrow/sup 4/I/sub 15///sub 2/ transition) is a linear function of the mean polarizability of the fragements of the ligand molecules coordinated by the lanthanide ion.
