These investigations are concerned with determining the oncogenic potentialities of vinyl chloride (VC) in experimental animals. The effect of this compound is being studied in relation to various experimental factors, such as routes of administration, dose level, length of treatment, species, strain, and age of the animals. Preliminary results are presented. When given by inhalation, VC induces in rats, Zymbal gland carcinomas, nephroblastomas, and angiosarcomas of the liver and of other anatomical sites; and in mice, pulmonary adenomas, mammary carcinomas and liver angiosarcomas. A direct relationship has been found between dose and length of treatment and neoplastic response. 25 references, 25 figures, 4 tables.
