Delay of ignition (tau) of mixtures of hydrogen with nitrous oxide measured in a static bypass apparatus and from reflected shock waves at 850 to 2000/sup 0/K and (N/sub 2/O)/(H) = 0.17 to 3. The value of tau virtually does not depend on the hydrogen concentration and varies inversely with the N/sub 2/O concentration. By comparison of measured tau with results of calculation using the theoretically obtained analytical expression of tau as a function of thermophysical and kinetic characteristics of the system, the necessity was substantiated of introducing into the chain-reaction scheme a linear termination step N/sub 2/O + H ..-->.. NH + NO (6), the rate constant of which is expressed as k/sub 6/ = 10/sup 14.8 +- 0.3/ exp (-(29.0 +- 1.5/RT)), cm/sup 3//mole.sec. 2 figures, 1 table.
