Calibration of densimeters for liquefied light hydrocarbons

Recognizing the need for an improved method of testing and calibrating LNG densimeters, the US gas industry established the LNG density reference system project to test the performance of commercial densimeters in LNG and to develop a calibration method. The density reference system (DRS) designed for the project uses a standard densimeter with a silicon single crystal immersed in the test liquid that is weighed by an electronic balance. The unique setup of the DRS allows analysts to safely use an LNG-like mixture as the test sample. Tests in the DRS confirmed the inaccuracy of commercial densimeters for LNG measurement; the errors arose because, for safety reasons, the instruments had never been calibrated with LNG. The DRS offers a means of accurately calibrating densimeters, especially those in refrigerated-gas service.
