Study for compacting the explosive LX-17
Technical Report

OSTI ID:6516071
The effects of compaction process variables on the pressed density of LX-17 were determined. The variables evaluated were pressure, number of compaction cycles and dwell time. Density was influenced to the greatest degree by the number of compaction cycles. A maximum of five cycles was studied. Smaller but significant increases in densities were achieved in raising the pressure from 140 MPa to 196 MPa and increasing the dwell time from 15 minutes to 240 min. Two lots of L-17 containing different TATB particle size distributions were evaluated. Both lots contained TATB meeting the current particle size specification. Significant differences in pressed densities were observed between these two LX-17 lots.
