Isotope shifts of 16 transitions in 4{ital f}{sup 7}5{ital d}6{ital s}{sup 2}({sup 9}{ital D})-4{ital f}{sup 7}5{ital d}6{ital s}6{ital p}({sup 9}{ital D},{sup 9}{ital F}) of Gd I for the stable isotopes with {ital A}=152--160 were measured by atomic-beam laser spectroscopy. The hyperfine constants {ital A} and {ital B} of {sup 155}Gd and {sup 157}Gd in two {sup 9}{ital D} terms and the {sup 9}{ital F} term were determined. The single-electron hyperfine parameters {ital a}{sub 4{ital f}}{sup 10} for the 4{ital f} electron and {ital a}{sub 5{ital d}}{sup {ital k}}{sub {ital s}k{ital l}},{ital b}{sub 5{ital d}}{sup {ital k}}{sub {ital s}k{ital l}} for the 5{ital d} electron were deduced. The electric quadrupole moments {ital Q} of {sup 155}Gd and {sup 157}Gd were obtained to be 1.27(5){ital b} and 1.36(6){ital b}, respectively. The {ital J} dependences of the isotope shifts in two {sup 9}{ital D} terms and the {sup 9}{ital F} term were observed. The parameter {ital z}{sub 5{ital d}} of the crossed-second-order effect for the {sup 9}{ital D} term of 4{ital f}{sup 7}5{ital d}6{ital s}{sup 2} was derived, and the value of {ital z}{sub 5{ital d}}/{lambda} was obtained to be 134(4) MHz/fm{sup 2}. We confirmed that the field shift is dominant in the crossed-second-order effect and the specific mass shift is negligible.
