The report by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) recommending a wide variety of proposals to improve the safety of U.S. shipping, storage, and transportation of LNG and other forms of energy was criticized by J. J. McGrath of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America and by G. H. Lawrence of the American Gas Association, who pointed out the excellent safety record of the U.S. LNG industry. According to Lawrence, the report makes a number of assumptions and conclusions about the potential hazards of LNG operations, including siting and transportation, which are not supported by the facts. New advanced technologies and procedures have been developed during the past few years as part of a constant effort by the gas industry to improve safety. AGA alone has sponsored more than 40 safety-related research programs, and more than 3100 LNG tanker voyages have been completed without incident during the past 20 yr.
