Effects of retrofits on combustion characteristics and seasonal efficiency of gas-fired furnaces and boilers

Designed to assess the energy-conservation effectiveness of retrofitting central gas-fired space-heating furnaces and boilers, the Space Heating Efficiency Improvement Program (SHEIP) collected and evaluated field data from over 2650 test sites in the US and Canada. Results for several groups of sites (similarly modified by a single, double, or quadruple retrofit) showed that gas savings ranged from 0.5% to 13.2% for warm-air schemes and 2.8% to 9.9% for hot-water boiler systems. For modifications that included gas-input derating (with or without secondary-air adjustment and vent restrictors); the gas savings could be simply but accurately correlated with the change in steady-state efficiency, level of derating, and vent-pipe area reduction.
