Building structure's impact on the effectiveness of furnace retrofits

A step-by-step procedure - designed to produce site-specific data and semiempirical formulations that would relate the role of building-structure and heater-installation characteristics to energy savings through heating-system changes - is aiding researchers in evaluating the effectiveness of two major furnace and boiler retrofit modifications: (1) fuel-input derating with secondary-air adjustment (flue baffling) and vent-connector cross-sectional area restriction (vent restrictor) and (2) automatic vent-damper operation. Preliminary results revealed some inadequacies in the proposed correlation, which will be improved when data from field tests become available.
