It is estimated that, during the 1980's, the Federal government will spend about $235 million on public transportation. The most important policy goals are to: encourage fuel conservation measures, including corporate van pools, shared-ride taxis, ridesharing, and corporate-subsidized buses; arrest the deterioration of the nation's system of highways/ allow the railroads to compete with other transportation modes without the imbalance created by government subsidies/ establish fare policies for public transit that decrease government operating subsidies/ encourage the production of fuel-efficient vehicles and technological innovative vehicles suitable for public transit/ improve transportation safety/ and improve urban air quality by discouraging the use of private transit modes in the inner cities.
