Double K-shell-vacancy production in the decays of /sup 181/W and /sup 165/Er

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)

The probabilities P/sub K/K of double K-shell-vacancy production per K-electron-capture decay of /sup 181/W and /sup 165/Er have been determined by means of K..cap alpha.. x-ray--K x-ray coincidence experiments: P/sub K/K = (2.4 +- 0.6) x 10/sup -6/ and P/sub K/K = (8.2 +- 2.8) x 10/sup -6/, respectively. The observed energy shifts of the hypersatellite Ta K..cap alpha../sub 1//sup H/-x-ray and Ho K..cap alpha../sub 1//sup H/-x-ray lines are 1026 +- 62 eV and 930 +- 70 eV, respectively. In the case of /sup 181/W, the theoretical P/sub K/K value deviates significantly from the above-mentioned experimental value. In combination with results from other experiments, this strongly suggests that, contrary to what the present theory predicts, P/sub K/K shows a considerable dependence on the ratio of transition energy to threshold energy.
