For heavy oil, steamflooding - or steam drive, as it's also called - remains the premier method of increasing recovery rates. Done right, it enables producers to capture from half to two-thirds of a reservoir's oil. Chevron researchers, along with Chevron production engineers, have developed steamflood injection patterns and practices that allow the company to recover nearly four barrels of oil for every one burned in steam generation. The industry average is about three-to-one. The promise for this leading-edge steamflood technology - which now has become economically attractive - is being realized in two Chevron projects separated by nearly 9000 miles. Both Chevron's steamflood project in California's San Joaquin Valley and the Company's participation in the Duri Field steamflood on the Indonesian island of Sumatra are megaprojects. They represent investments of several billion dollars, but with increased production payouts that are extremely attractive.
