Cancer and low level ionizing radiation

The following topics are reviewed: increase in cancer incidence following exposures below the maximum permissible level; mechanisms of radiation injury; effects of age and sex on risk of developing a malignancy from radiation exposure; changes in levels of permissible exposure to ionizing radiation; cancer risk and range of linearity with dose; incidence of radioinduced leukemia in children; underestimation of risks from Japanese data; low dose to Hanford workers who died of cancer during 1944 to 1972; underestimation of risks to man from extrapolation of animal data to man; importance of medical profession in contributing to unnecessary population dose; and recommendations to the National Council on Radiation Protection and other organizations for reducing maximum permissible exposures. It is emphasized that there is no safe level of exposure. (HLW)
