Lightning detection and warning on the Nevada Test Site

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6501740
The mission of the Weather Service Nuclear Support Office in Las Vegas, Nevada, is to provide all meteorological services needed to support the Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office (DOE/NV) programs at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and elsewhere. These services are performed under the authority of an Interagency Agreement (IA) between the National Weather Service and DOE/NV. WSNSO meteorologists and meteorological technicians provide a 24-hour weather watch for the NTS and its surrounding areas including the Tonopah Test Range. Given the critical nature of operations on the NTS facility, WSNSO maintains a high level of awareness of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning. 8 refs., 4 figs.
