The Air Resources Laboratory (ARL), Special Operations and Research Division (SORD), is a component of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The mission of this NOAA office is to provide all the meteorological services required in support of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)/Nevada Operations Office (NV) authorized activities on and off the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The SORD activities that support DOE/NV programs are conducted under the authority of an interagency agreement between NOAA/ARL and DOE/NV. The NTS, a DOE environment research facility, was the nation`s underground nuclear weapons testing facility. This facility occupies an area of 3500 km{sup 2} (1350 mile) in south central Nevada. The NTS is located {approximately}75 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The topography of the NTS is complex, with a system of dry lake beds, canyons, and mountains. Elevations range from nearly 850 m (2750 ft) above mean sea level (MSL) to 2300 m (7600 ft) MSL. The climate is dry, with cool winters and hot summers.
