Environmental impacts of ground disposal of sludges containing trace metals

The potential impact of trace metal elements associated with the land reutilization of wastewater sludges is evaluated. Results published in the literature, together with data obtained in laboratory and field experiments are used to demonstrate the impact of cropland application of sludges. Studies indicate that when sludges are used to satisfy plant nutrient requirements, trace metals introduced over the short term are not likely to damage crops. However, the accumulation of phytotoxic metals in the surface soil poses a potential danger. (33 references, 9 tables)
