Reactions of hydroxyl radicals with hydrogen peroxide at ambient and elevated temperatures. [10 MeV electrons]
- Studsvik Energiteknik AB, Nykoepig, Sweden
The reaction of hydroxyl radicals with hydrogen peroxide has been studied in the pH range 6.8 to 13.8. k/sub OH+H/sub 2/O/sub 2// was determined to be (2.7 +- 0.3) x 10/sup 7/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/ and k/sub 0/sup -/+HO/sub 2//sup -// to be (4.0 +- 0.5) x 10/sup 8/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. The rate constants of the cross reactions OH + HO/sub 2//sup -/ and O/sup -/ + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ could not be determined separately. However, an upper limit of k/sub 0/sup -/+H/sub 2/O/sub 2// = 5 x 10/sup 8/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/ was measured. Consequently, by disregarding this reaction, k/sub OH+HO/sub 2//sup -// was determined to (7.5 +- 1.0) x 10/sup 9/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. The reaction between OH and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ was studied at pH 7.8 in the temperature range 14 to 160/sup 0/C, and an activation energy of 14 kJ mol/sup -1/ (3.4 kcal mol/sup -1/) was derived from the Arrhenius plot with a rate constant of (2.7 +- 0.3) x 10/sup 7/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/ at 20/sup 0/C.
